Jahrhundert. Der Bau einer Festung wurde um das Jahr 1060 vom Normannenherzog Wilhelm dem Eroberer beauftragt; er erw\u00e4hlte Caen zur Hauptstadt seines Herzogtums. Sein Sohn Heinrich I. von England lie\u00df eine Kirche und den Bergfried (franz\u00f6sisch donjon oder englisch keep) erbauen, von dem heute nur noch die Grundmauern erkennbar sind.\n\nZu Weihnachten des Jahres 1182 empfingen hier K\u00f6nig Heinrich II. von England und seine beiden S\u00f6hne Richard L\u00f6wenherz und Johann Ohneland die Huldigungen von mehr als 1000 \u2013 zumeist adeligen \u2013 Rittern. Im Jahr 1204 eroberte der franz\u00f6sische K\u00f6nig Philipp II. das Herzogtum Normandie zur\u00fcck. Er und seine Nachfolger lie\u00dfen die Burg ausbauen.\n\nW\u00e4hrend der Franz\u00f6sischen Revolution wurde der mittelalterliche Donjon abgerissen.
